Historic New Briggate Street in Leeds is currently undergoing significant development. This bustling street is home to the oldest church in Leeds and the renowned Leeds Grand Theatre, as well as a vibrant mix of new shops, bars, nightclubs, and venues. But it’s its dynamic community that really sets it apart—a transient mix of commuters, night owls, art lovers, sex workers, and individuals seeking shelter. Funded by Historic England, the High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme aims to unite people in exploring the rich culture and heritage of historic high streets like New Briggate, providing funding to ensure their history is preserved and the diverse stories of its people are told. As part of a group commission from HSHAZ for Leeds art collective East Street Arts, Alastair created drawings that captured the heritage of the area, with a specific emphasis on the evolution of signage over the years.
