Every year, Rotherham town centre transforms into an urban playground for the UPLIFT Rotherham Skate and Art Festival. Joining forces with Rotherham Council and Flux Rotherham, this eagerly awaited event caters to local youth and features a pop-up roller rink hosted by the Roller Girl Gang, an exceptional DJ lineup, and two arenas dedicated to skateboarding and BMX. Approached to work on installations, wayfinding and placemaking for the festival, Alastair suggested a concept that was inspired by the collage aesthetic of stickers and graffiti in skate culture. He created a cast of inclusive characters that represented participants in ramp sports including wheelchair, rollerskating, rollerblading, BMX, scootering and skateboarding. The ramps were hand-painted using a combination of traditional signwriting and spray painting techniques. Elsewhere, digitally-designed vinyl waymarking stickers mimicked those processes. The result was an inclusive pop-up skate park set to inspire the next generation of adrenaline junkies.
