For Bristol's 650th anniversary celebration, a blessing of unicorns descended on the city’s streets. Bristol has embraced unicorns as symbols since the 17th century. In 2023, Unicorn Fest used unicorns to unite businesses, creatives, communities, and schools across the city and region. For the festival, sixty artists put their mark on a unicorn statue for an art trail and, following that, auctioned it off to raise money for the charity, Leukaemia Care. For Alastair’s submission, Gerty the Punkicorn, he aimed to capture the city’s famed spirit of rebellion and individuality by drawing inspiration from the local punk scene. The ‘tattooed’ torso featured punk symbols and plenty of nods to Bristolian slang and imagery, from the Bristol Bears to the hot air balloon festival. More than a mythical creature, Gerty the Punkicorn proudly stood as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, a loud and proud representation of Bristol's rich culture, rebellious spirit, and commitment to diversity.
